About Us
Our History
Dr. Deborah Bershel started Davis Square Family Practice in 1988 and has remained in this close knit ever changing community for the last 30+ years.
Opening this practice with the intention to honor the patient as well as the provider. She understood that patients were able to determine their own destinies. She promoted those who were underserved, undervalued and misunderstood. Her practice focused on the person not just the symptoms with which they present.
As the years went on the desire to look for different, better and innovative ways to help with patient symptoms was driven to broaden beyond classic approaches. First, understanding the underserved LGBTQAI+ community and treating those who desire transgender hormones. Finding and advocating for surgical interventions based on patient self identification in the 90s. Later, by remaining open and innovative in new therapies for chronic symptoms and illnesses. Staying up to date with new testing, specialists and interventions for the DSFP patients.
Diving more into the understanding of how the body stores and deals with trauma, stress and chronic disease drives the clinic’s desire to provide multigenerational and holistic preventative care. Remaining on the forefront of advocating for patients to get accurate diagnosis and proactive treatment with often under/misdiagnosed diseases such as: EDS, POTS, endometriosis and autoimmune is an important aspect to our care.
Over the years DSFP has continued to gather providers who are looking at how they as providers are able to support the patient population in validating their experience, treating their symptoms and advocating for their care. We started at 260 Elm St and with much joy built out and had the ability to develop our own space in the historic Gorin Building at 255 Elm Street in 2022. In January of 2024 Dr. Bershel passed the leadership to Michelle Clarke while remaining aboard for patient care and ongoing support in management of the practice.

Our Mission & Vision
We strive to provide care to our patients by meeting them where they are at and understanding that a person’s history and experience with the medical community prior through walking through our doors. We hope to develop a practice that is centered around evidence based medicine with an open mind to those things we have yet to understand about the human body and therapies available that can improve the patient experience.
Our goal is to provide holistic care within the context of the family unit. It is important for us to identify and understand your family dynamic as well as family health history. We have all discovered the interconnectedness of our learned behaviors, beliefs and social circumstances impact our health over the course of a lifetime.

Who we are

Deborah Bershel, MD
I try to focus on what is important for your personal health and wellbeing. It is not just your cholesterol profile that I’m interested in but what those numbers truly mean in light of all the other factors that affect your risk for stroke and heart disease. Whatever it takes to help you achieve a healthier and happier life I will be supportive of even if it doesn’t fit into the construct of standard Western medicine.

At the core of my clinical philosophy is the belief that lifestyle modification is essential for achieving wellness and is the fundamental intervention for risk modification and disease reversal. In my practice, I use a systems-oriented medical approach that helps patients identify the root causes of their choices, allowing me to prescribe highly personalized intensive lifestyle and behavioral interventions as a foundational therapeutic modality.
I believe in nurturing and empowering patients to take ownership of their health by facilitating their learning, implementation, and internalization of the necessary cognitive and behavioral changes required to restore and sustain whole-body health and wellness. To facilitate these goals, I prioritize the development of a collaborative provider-patient partnership as the cornerstone of effective care.

I am a passionate provider who is invested in caring for the whole family as well as the whole system of each individual. I value the personal experience one has when receiving medical care, focusing on individualized evidence based medicine.
I am very excited to introduce the model of Fourth Trimester Care as a service at Davis Square Family Practice. I am offering care at home for newborns and mothers for the first 2 months of life. After training with Tova Health it opened my eyes to how the start of our families, the child and the family as a living unit is an extraordinary place to start the discussion of wellness for all in the unit in order to create success for each individual. It is an amazing opportunity to see the home environment and allow for more supportive care of the family. It is the very definition of family medicine.
I believe understanding and compassion are the best medicine. I strive to provide each patient with medical advice based on current best practice evidence and experience. It is vital that all patients of all ages feel respected, supported and heard by their provider. The provider patient relationship has great power in creating growth and change in both quality and quantity of life.

I think I would call myself the unofficial cheerleader at Davis Square Family Practice. As a nurse practitioner, I receive a lot of joy from the relationships I have with my patients. The opportunity to encourage folks towards their health goals and celebrate when they have achieved success, fuels me. I believe I am privileged to care for some truly remarkable, resilient people.
I am interested in trauma-informed care, enjoy working with folks who are neurodivergent, and am interested in alternative therapies. There is so much to know and learn in this wide world, and I am curious about everything!
One of the directions my curiosity has lead me is to the study of fascia, specifically through the Fascial Distortion Model (FDM). I look forward to meeting you!

I joined Davis Square Family Practice in 2017 after looking for a small independent practice that was focused on family and community health, which I have found here. I have over 20 years of nursing and research experience. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I am trained to work with both children and adults. Partnering with patients requires listening, understanding and respecting each patient’s unique needs, culture, values, and preferences. I want to help patients maintain health and wellness over the long term with particular focus on preventative care. I have a true desire to enhance a positive healing experience and confidence to those in need. I enjoy treating all patients of all ages and all backgrounds, providing quality patient-centered care in order to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent disease.
Outside the office I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, cooking (not baking), traveling and walking my crazy dogs.

I joined Davis Square Family Practice in Spring 2024. I was drawn to this practice because of the holistic, family-centered and trauma-informed care it is widely known for providing. As a clinician, I aim to approach you with curiosity, patience and compassion.
Part of what draws me to Family Practice is the opportunity to build long-term relationships with individuals and families. I want to learn about who you are as a person in addition to your health concerns. I use conversation, questionnaires, and physical assessment to gain a better understanding of where you are in terms of your health and wellness. Together we can explore what you are looking for in a PCP and work to achieve those goals and outcomes. I look forward to honing my pediatric and newborn assessment and diagnostic skills and am grateful to have such knowledgeable colleagues to support me in this process.
The clinical care I provide is rooted in science, evidence-based practice and current guidelines, and complemented by a variety of clinical and non-clinical life experiences. Some of the most influential experiences to my practice include- being raised in a small town in Northern California close to the redwood forest, shadowing clinicians in Haiti, training in a women’s prison and drop in clinic at a homeless shelter and later working in community health in East Boston during the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
I continually seek out educational opportunities to support my practice and grow my skill set. I do this through attending formal CME conferences, listening to health focused podcasts on my way to work, and reading books.
Outside of work I like spending time with my wife and our two year old son and enjoy cooking, baking, reading, and being physically active and finding new places to launch a kayak.

I joined Davis Square Family Practice in 2010 as the Office Manager. It has been so satisfying to watch the continuing growth and development of this amazing practice to where we are today. And, we’re not done yet. Every day I enjoy working with amazing colleagues and engaging with our wonderful patients.
My previous roles provided me with experience managing complex problems and being responsive to business needs in a variety of settings. By far, working at Davis Square Family Practice has been the most fulfilling, educational, enjoyable position I’ve held.
When not working I spend my time knitting, studying knitting techniques, and traveling with fellow knitters to near and far destinations to learn the history and tradition of fiber arts around the world. My other great joy is spending time with family and friends, with knitting bag in hand, of course
