Unique Services
Deborah Bershel, MD
It was back in 1988 that I first began practicing medicine in Davis Square.  Somerville is still filled with the same glorious diversity of people that were
here back then.  And my patients still bring me the same joy that they did
20 years ago. I try to focus on what is important for your personal health and wellbeing.  It is not just your cholesterol profile that Iím interested in but what
those numbers truly mean in light of all the other factors that affect your risk
for stroke and heart disease.  Whatever it takes to help you achieve a healthier
and happier life I will be supportive of even if it doesnít fit into the construct of  standard Western medicine.

Barbara Kaplan, LICSW
Hello! I am Barbara Kaplan, a licensed clinical social worker, and I am delighted to provide mental health services to patients at here at DSFP as part of our commitment to fostering the health and wellbeing of our patients.
I work with adults of all ages dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, and relationship concerns. Many of my clients are young adults navigating the challenges of work, love, and friendship. I help individuals, couples, and families develop resilience to cope with life challenges-illness, disability, loss, and trauma. I am comfortable working with people who identify as gender and sexual minorities (LGBTQ*) and their families.

I can provide a brief consultation, short-term or long-term therapy, based on your goals. With over 25 years of experience, I draw from a range of approaches: cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, stress-reduction, mindfulness meditation, and IFS-informed therapy.

I will work with you in a respectful and collaborative way to identify paths for growth so that you can find greater self-acceptance, confidence, and life satisfaction.  Clients and colleagues comment on my warm down-to-earth style, compassion, and ability to instill hope and promote positive change.

I am able to bill most health insurance plans. I have an additional office in downtown Boston. You can talk with me about scheduling an appointment by:

I am Michelle Clarke, the new nurse practitioner on the block at Davis Square Family Practice. I had the pleasure of joining the practice in September.

My main focus as a practitioner is to help people define and reach their health goals. I believe that we are all built differently, have different requirements to maintain health and with the right understanding can reach our goals. I believe in honest communication, open access to health care and care without judgment. Education is a focus of my care, as people cannot make decisions if they do not understand the basis for their symptoms and the disease process.

I look forward to continuing to practice with Dr. Bershel and Marie Botte, FNP.

My name is Carmen Phillips, and now I'm the newest Nurse Practitioner on the block!

I'm tremendously pleased to be working with Dr. Bershel, Michelle Clarke, F.N.P, and Chris Mulvey, F.N.P.   Being given the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with thoughtful, intelligent colleagues is exciting and one of my great pleasures.   I am quite interested in alternative therapies and am open to incorporating them into the care of my patients.  There is so much to know and learn in this big, wide world, and I am curious about everything!

I received my bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Michigan and my Master's of Science degree, Family Nurse Practitioner, from Regis College.  Before joining Davis Square Family Practice, I was a nurse at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston for 11 years and a nurse practitioner at Sports Medicine North, Occupational Health in Peabody.   Both challenging, educational, and rewarding experiences.

As a nurse practitioner, I receive tremendous joy from the relationships I have with my patients.  The opportunity to encourage patients towards their health goals and cheer when they have achieved success fuels me.  A patient's resilience in the face of challenge impresses, educates, and delights me.   I look forward to meeting you!
